MiTi offers several unique classes of low-power-loss, highly efficient magnetic bearings, which employ active, passive, and combined active-passive magnetic bearing technology. They also feature advanced digital controls. The result is a simple and robust magnetic bearing design - one that yields significantly reduced system vibrations. MiTi is also developing new and novel designs which will reduce bearing power consumption and losses to even lower levels than state-of-the-art homopolar designs.

MiTi magnetic bearings are directly applicable to:

  • Aerospace and ground-based systems.
  • Flywheel energy storage and attitude control devices.
  • Pumps for cryogenic and biomedical systems.

Hybrid Bearings

MiTi hybrid bearings integrate the company's compliant foil and magnetic bearing technologies into a lightweight, high-load-capacity bearing system. This novel design is suitable for aerospace and industrial applications requiring high levels of redundancy and reliability in a compact package.

MiTi hybrid bearings have demonstrated:

  • Uninterrupted high-speed operation, even when subjected to shock levels exceeding 14 Gs.
  • Continuous rotor support and full-speed operation, even when electrical power to the magnetic bearing is terminated.
  • Load capacity of close to triple the same size and weight magnetic bearing.
  • Auxiliary & Backup Bearings

In response to industrial and aerospace applications requiring highly reliable, robust and shock-tolerant bearing designs, MiTi has two innovative approaches:

The Zero Clearance Auxiliary Bearing (ZCAB), incorporating radially moveable rolling elements in a compliantly damped mounting arrangement, has sustained more that 20 simulated transient shock and magnetic bearing failures and subsequent recoveries without refurbishment. Recently a prototype ZCAB with a 1000 lb. radial and axial design load capacity at 18,000 rpm was delivered to a customer. Joint government- and industry-sponsored development efforts are underway to further the life and operating envelope of the ZCAB

For use in extreme environments (i.e., in a vacuum or at very high temperature and speeds), the MiTi powder-lubricated backup bearing has demonstrated the ability to support rotors operating at 1500 oF and 60,000 rpm. This bearing, with its thin powder delivery system, is also being developed under joint industry/government sponsorship.
